Chapter 5

JOLENE

I'm not sure why I'm laughing too, but the idea of a headline reading, “Social Media Influencer Dies Taking Selfie," is so ridiculous in the fact that it probably happens more than I realize, that it’s either laugh or cry. And since I don’t seem to have the capacity to cry, I guess it’s laugh.

Silas's laughter eventually dies down, and he wipes the tears from his eyes.

“I’m sorry, but I haven’t laughed that hard in years.”

“I’m glad I can amuse you,” I quip.

He shakes his head and sighs. “Well, this rain doesn’t seem to be letting up anytime soon. Are you hungry?”

“I could eat.”

He pushes to his feet and walks over to the corner where a little kitchen is set up.

“Do you like chicken stir fry? I just picked up some fresh vegetables.”

“Sounds good.”

I watch him from the couch as he works efficiently in the kitchen, he starts to prepare the meal. I don't know anyone that can cook, myself included. I've watched professionals on TV prepare meals, but they make it look so easy. I know from the handful of times I tried to make a meal, it ended with me using the broom handle to knock the smoke detector off the ceiling.

I offer to help, and he waves me over.

“Do you cook a lot?” he asks.

“Define a lot.”

“Have you turned on your oven more than once this month?”

“No.”

“Okay,” he nods. “I’m going to put you in charge with prep work. Whatever I put in front of you, just chop it up.”

I chuckle. “I can do that.”

“Good, we’ll start with something simple.” He places a red bell pepper in front of me on the cutting board.

Our bodies brush up against one another as we work closely in the small kitchen. I feel the familiar flutter in my lower belly every time he reaches around me. I know what he’s doing. It’s obvious his skills at flirting are limited over the years of living alone on this mountain. But I’m happy to help him move things along.

“Here, try this." I offer up a piece of the yellow pepper I just finished chopping up.

He looks down at the offering. I start to move it towards his mouth, but just before he can take a bite, I put the piece of pepper between my teeth. He looks down at my mouth and then back up at me.

I can see the wheels turning in his head, but I know he wants to kiss me. We nearly kissed earlier, if it wasn’t for the thunder making us jump apart we would have. Silas leans in and takes a bite of the pepper, our lips brushing slightly against one another. With only that brush of our lips, I feel the sparks between us electrify. From the look in his eyes, I know that he felt it too.

I swallow my piece of the pepper and nearly choke in surprise. Silas pushes the cutting board and the knife, and the chopped vegetables with a swipe of his arm off the counter.
